The Hilo Woman’s Club recently hosted its annual installation luncheon at the Hilo Yacht Club. Helene Tajiri, Brilhante Real Estate agent and community leader, installed the officers for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
The executive board includes club president Beverly Heikes, who accepted the gavel for the ninth time; recording secretary Shirley Woods; corresponding secretary Virginia Maeda and treasurer Diane Czerwonka.
Entertainment for the event included selections by Vic Vierra.
The club highlighted its scholarship program, which supports the education endeavors of the young people in the community. The funds are collected through various fundraising endeavors spearheaded by club members. This year, three recipients, Shaylea Chung-Haslam, Jamie Pagan and Naomi Sensano, were selected to receive $1,000 each to assist them with the cost of their college education at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
HWC continues to make numerous monetary contributions to various community organizations in East Hawaii. This past year’s recipients included Hawaii Care Choices of Hilo, Friends of the Palace Theater, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, Hilo Medical Center Foundation, Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kuikahi Mediation Center and The Food Basket.
Heikes said the club is very motivated and committed to continuing it’s legacy of service and support to important issues. HWC has been a strong and firm advocate for improvement in the community since 1921.
Heikes welcomes those interested to join the club, as membership is always open. Perspective members and community members can learn more about the club during the “Afternoon of Aloha” at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the clubhouse located at 7 Lele St. in Hilo.
The club will have heavy pupus, entertainment by Vic Vierra and Company along with hula performances.
